1 Schematic diagram of a dc machine (GIF)

Description: The action of the commutator is to produce a fixed spatial distribution of current directions in the armature conductors independent of shaft rotation. The field created by these currents (armature reaction) is horizontally directed and is represented by the space vector I a. The field established by the excitation of the stator poles is directed along the vertical axis and is represented by the space vector λ f. The electromagnetic torque may be expressed as T e = k( I a x λ f ).

2 Position control of a dc motor (GIF)

Description: The block diagram representation of the positional control system is shown below. The dc motor is initially at standstill and position set a 0 radian when an initial step of 1 radian is imposed followed later by a reduced step of 0.5 rad. A step mechanical load is also applied at a specified time. The position transients are illustrated.
